Rhodiola rosea (Golden Root)From $1Table of contentsWhat is Rhodiola rosea?Rhodiola rosea is a plant that grows in cold regions of the world, such as the Arctic and high mountains. In some parts of the world, it has been used as a traditional remedy to cope with stress. Extracts of the plant have been marketed under the brand “Arctic Root”. How is it meant to work? This is a traditional remedy that is supposed to increase the body’s resistance to stress. However, the mechanism by which it might work is not understood. Does it work?GADOne study looked at the effects of Rhodiola rosea in ten people with GAD. They were given a daily dose of 340mg for ten weeks. After this time their anxiety symptoms were reduced. However, the study was small and there was no comparison with placebos (dummy pills). Other Anxiety DisordersThere is no evidence on whether Rhodiola rosea works for PTSD, social phobia, panic disorder, specific phobias or OCD. Are there any risks? The study above reported only mild side effects including dizziness and dry mouth. RecommendationThere is not enough evidence to say whether Rhodiola rosea works.
